In January this year, Standing Voice delivered Skin Cancer Prevention clinics in Mara and Simiyu regions. Across four days, our community dermatologists treated 286 patients, each of whom received screening for precancerous lesions, cryotherapy treatment, protective clothing and sunscreen, and education on mitigating the risks arising from exposure to the sun.

In January, we were joined by the Principal of the Regional Dermatology Training Centre and Standing Voice Skin Cancer Advisory Committee member, Dr Daudi Mavura, who led a two-day dermato-surgery workshop at Musoma Regional Hospital. The workshop focused on providing training in expert care for people with albinism. In all, seven community dermatologists gained further expertise in minor surgery to excise cancerous lesions. During the surgical workshop, 16 patients received life-saving operations.
Our executive director, Harry Freeland, travelled with filmmaker Max Duncan to document the programme. The resulting film, commissioned by our programme partner and funder the Pierre Fabre Foundation, is an intimate portrait of one family’s life-saving journey through our clinic. The short film celebrates the success of the Skin Cancer Prevention Programme, and our blossoming partnership with the Pierre Fabre Foundation.
In just five years, this initiative has grown to become the most comprehensive programme of dermatological healthcare for people with albinism in East Africa. With our partners and supporters, we will continue to expand this service and save many more lives in the months and years to come.
