‘Time for Implementation’ was the by-line for the latest UN-led conference attended by Standing Voice in Nairobi, Kenya, in February. Now, that call to action finally appears within reach. As the final consultation to refine the Regional Action Plan on Albinism in Africa, this meeting laid the groundwork for a five-year plan to address the needs of people with albinism across the African continent.
A diversity of grassroots civil society representatives discussed and reviewed the proposed targets and indicators for implementation of the Regional Action Plan. Participants enjoyed presentations on best practice for engaging the UN in their various initiatives, and collaborating to coordinate their work. Delegates also shared insights into the best ways to design effective communication strategies in their advocacy and public awareness initiatives.
Standing Voice’s Operations Manager Alex Magaga was one of three representatives chosen from Tanzania, Mozambique and Mali to deliver a key note presentation to conference delegates. Alex focused his talk on Standing Voice’s Skin Cancer Prevention and Vision Programmes. He also presented on findings from a ground-breaking community engagement project that Standing Voice has delivered across Tanzania, which used science, art, music and performances to build community understanding of albinism.
We hope these initiatives will now serve to inspire further expansion of our programmes across Sub-Saharan Africa, under the auspices of the Regional Action Plan.
The event showed great promise, presenting a wonderful opportunity to connect with new people and organisations across Africa in the movement to end human rights abuses against people with albinism; “this is the time for action.” As for Alex? “I enjoyed every moment of it.”
