One of the primary ambitions of our Skin Cancer Prevention Programme is to equip professionals in Tanzania and Malawi with the tools they need to improve the dermatological health of people with albinism. Building the capacity of local health systems is critical for sustainability and the long-term eradication of skin cancer.
As part of this effort, Standing Voice has spent the last year developing the Manual of Best Practice: Skin Cancer Prevention and Management for Persons with Albinism in Sub-Saharan Africa. Produced in collaboration with the International Foundation for Dermatology, Pierre Fabre Foundation and a team of experts, and funded by Novartis and the International League of Dermatological Societies, the manual is a groundbreaking guide to albinism and skin cancer for health workers across Africa. Featuring expert contributions from Tanzania, Malawi, the UK, USA and Spain, it is targeted toward consultant dermatologists, surgeons and clinical officers working with people with albinism across Sub-Saharan Africa. Its aim is to consolidate the learning of healthcare professionals and advise on best practices for the care and treatment of patients with albinism in low-resource settings.
Development of the manual was led by Dr Andrew Sharp, the Chairperson of our Skin Cancer Advisory Committee. As a body of internationally recognised dermatology experts, this committee continues to act as a vital instrument of training and vehicle for world-class research in the delivery of our Skin Cancer Prevention Programme. In June, our Programmes Manager Jamie Walling travelled with Dr Sharp to formally launch the manual of best practice at the 24th World Congress of Dermatology in Milan.
As a user-friendly tool for change, the manual will help us achieve faster and more reliable replication of the Skin Cancer Prevention Programme in countries across Africa. Its French translation led by the Pierre Fabre Foundation will be distributed in Burkina Faso, Togo, Mali, Cote d'lvoire, and Niger next year.
Standing Voice’s Skin Cancer Advisory Committee is also in the process of developing a training framework based on the manual that will complement this resource. This framework will guide clinicians to harness the recommendations and best practices identified in our manual, and replicate these in their own clinical contexts.
