I had completed my History degree at the University of Cambridge and was in the midst of volunteering in India when I first learnt about Standing Voice. I'd already gained an interest in international development while volunteering in a rural, gang-affected area of El Salvador for 10 weeks. This experience, together with my placement in India, pushed me to explore global social inequality in my career, and led me into contact with Standing Voice.
From Day One, the Standing Voice team allowed me to take ownership of my work. Within my first few hours, I was already working with grant writers on a funding application. I'd never written a grant application before, and I was exhilarated and humbled to be involved in such a critical task.
During my time at Standing Voice, I was able to lead on other tasks in areas that were new to me. I designed the guidelines handbook for a new project, and the instruction manual for Standing Voice's Vision Ambassador training sessions. I coordinated with our other volunteers around the globe to support them in their advocacy initiatives.
Working with Standing Voice taught me a lot about the charity sector, and gave me a wealth of transferrable skills with which to move forward. I was given freedom, flexibility, and space to grow in my role. Working in a dynamic environment with passionate colleagues on such a compelling topic was invaluable to me.
As someone looking to build a career in the charity sector, volunteering at Standing Voice gave me the necessary experience to apply for a range of jobs. I was able to understand how charities work, and ascertain which roles best complement my skills and attributes within those organisations.
My advice to anyone considering applying to Standing Voice: do it. You'll learn a lot, surprise yourself, and have a lot of fun!
