Kennington Overseas Aid

An enduring partnership

2017 marks the third year of partnership between Standing Voice and Kennington Overseas Aid (KOA), a wonderful community fundraising organisation, who this year pledged to raise funds in support of our Vision Programme. This programme has provided vision care and education to over 1,000 people with albinism across Tanzania.

Our vision clinics provide each patient with screening for visual impairment; assistive devices including monocular telescopes and prescription glasses; and information sessions and resources on low vision and the use of supportive devices. Delivered by Tanzanian optometrists, the programme has also trained a network of schoolteachers as ‘Vision Ambassadors’ tasked with monitoring and protecting the welfare of students with albinism in schools across Tanzania. On April 8th, KOA held a “From Your Own Correspondent” Dinner, their first fundraising event of the year. Speaking at the dinner was KOA’s Laila Ismail Khan, and Standing Voice’s own Programmes Manager Jamie Walling. Laila opened the evening with an engaging account of her 30 years working with UNICEF, including stories of her postings in Mozambique and Zambia, as well as her personal reflections on growing up as a woman in Pakistan.

Jamie followed Laila with stories from his own personal journey into the charity sector, and shared some of his seminal experiences working with Standing Voice. With a background in supporting marginalised communities, Jamie reflected on his work with asylum seekers and those affected by AIDS and drug and alcohol addiction. Jamie also spoke about some of his more memorable moments working for Standing Voice, such as gifting a woman with glasses for the first time in her life at a Pan-African Albinism Conference and moving her to tears.

On July 1st, Standing Voice made another visit to Kennington when our Communications and Fundraising Coordinator Sam Clarke attended an operetta performed by the Kennington United Choirs. The evening featured speeches by Sam and KOA Co-Chair Brenda Groth. An incredible £11,000 was raised in total.

Standing Voice expresses its deepest gratitude to KOA for its continuing support and partnership. We look forward to sustained collaboration in future!
